Saying No to Good Projects

Studio Notes

How turning work down shapes a studio more than the work it takes?
The hardest decisions in a studio are not about design. They are about which work to take. Saying no to something bad is easy. Saying no to something good, with a real budget, from people you like, is the decision that actually shapes a studio.
Capacity is not a calendar question
The question is not whether the hours exist. It is whether the work can be done at the standard the studio wants to be known for while the other projects are also finishing. A project accepted at eighty percent attention costs more than the fee, because it becomes the work people see.
Portfolio is strategy
Every project you take is an argument for the next one. Three similar jobs make you the studio that does that thing, whether or not you intended it. Taking a smaller, sharper project over a larger, generic one is often the better commercial decision on a two-year view.
The warning signs are usually early
A brief that keeps changing before the contract is signed. A decision-maker who never appears in the meetings. A timeline that assumes no review cycles. These do not improve after kickoff. They compound.
Say no properly
A vague no leaves the door open in a way that wastes everyone's time. A specific no, with the actual reason and a recommendation of someone better suited, protects the relationship. A surprising number of those referrals come back a year later as the right project.
Price is a filter, not just a number
Charging what the work costs to do properly removes clients who need it done cheaply, which is a different service. That is not arrogance. It is being honest that you are not the right studio for that job.
How we do it at Monaro
We check every enquiry against three questions: can we do it well right now, does it make the next project easier to win, and do we want to work with these people for the length of it. If any answer is no, we say so early and recommend someone else. Turning work down is how the work we take stays good.
